Two Weeks Notice Letter Examples

Pick the example that matches your relationship with your employer, then adjust the names, the date and anything that does not sound like you.

A good two weeks notice letter does four things: it says you are resigning, gives your last day, thanks the employer and offers to help with the handover. Everything else is optional. The five examples below use the same building blocks in different tones. They are generated by the same engine as our two weeks notice letter generator, so you can open that page and produce your own version with your name and date filled in.

Example 1: standard

The default for most jobs. Neutral, polite, and short enough to read in a minute.

Alex Morgan October 30, 2026 Jamie Lee Acme Inc. Dear Jamie Lee, Please accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation from my position as Marketing Manager at Acme Inc.. My last day of work will be November 13, 2026. This serves as my two weeks’ notice. Thank you for the opportunity to work at Acme Inc.. I appreciate the support and experience I have gained during my time here. During my remaining time, I will do everything I can to ensure a smooth transition, including wrapping up current projects and documenting my work. I wish you and the team continued success. Sincerely, Alex Morgan

Example 2: warm

Use this when you have a good relationship with your manager and want to say so.

I have accepted a new opportunity that aligns with my long-term career goals. Thank you for the opportunities, support, and trust you have given me at Acme Inc.. I have learned a great deal from you and the team, and I will always be grateful for my time here. I want to make this as easy as possible for the team. Over the coming weeks I will wrap up my projects, document my work, and help train whoever takes over my responsibilities. I wish you and the whole team all the best, and I hope our paths cross again. With gratitude, Alex Morgan

Example 3: short and simple

Right for a small team, a casual workplace, or when you do not want to say much.

Example 4: formal

Better for large organizations, regulated industries and anywhere that expects a conventional business letter.

My last day of work will be November 13, 2026. This serves as my two weeks’ notice. I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the opportunities afforded to me during my tenure at Acme Inc.. I will make every effort to ensure an orderly transition of my responsibilities prior to my departure. I wish the company every success in the future. Respectfully, Alex Morgan

Example 5: with a reason

You never have to give a reason, but if you want to, keep it brief and positive. Here the reason is relocating.

What every example has in common

  • A clear statement. The first sentence says that you are resigning and from which role.
  • A specific last day. A date, not “in two weeks”.
  • No complaints. A resignation letter is a record, not a place to argue.
  • An offer to help. It does not need to promise more than you can deliver.

How to adapt an example

Replace the placeholders, then read it aloud. If a sentence sounds like something you would never say, change it. If your contract asks for notice in a specific form, such as a letter addressed to HR, follow that wording first. For a few common situations, there are dedicated versions: retail jobs, remote jobs, a message by text or Slack, a letter addressed to HR and an email with subject lines.

Before you hand it in

Count your notice period with the two weeks notice calculator, so the date in the letter is the one you mean. Tell your manager before the letter lands. And if you are not sure how that conversation should go, read what to say when you quit.

Not legal advice. This page is general information. Notice rules, final-pay deadlines and benefits differ by country, state and employer, and your contract can change the answer. Check your own paperwork, or ask a qualified employment professional if a lot is at stake.

Frequently asked questions

Which two weeks notice example should I use?

Use the standard example for most jobs. Choose warm if you are close to your manager, short for casual workplaces and formal for large or traditional employers.

How long should a two weeks notice letter be?

Three to five short paragraphs, or about 100 to 150 words. Longer letters tend to add reasons and details you do not need.

Do I have to sign the letter?

If you print it, sign above your typed name. If you send it by email, your typed name is enough.

Can I copy and paste an example exactly?

You can, but change the placeholders and read it through. A letter that sounds like you is better than a perfect template.
